What's new in WAsP Engineering 4

WAsP Engineering 4 contains several new features and significant improvements. The most important new feature is the Spectral Correction (SC) method for extreme wind calculation; a new way to calculate extreme winds using on-site wind measurements.

With the SC method, there is no need for the WAsP Engineering user to provide long-term wind data in order to calculate extreme winds. Instead, the SC method uses:

  1. Short-term (around one year) on-site wind measurements provided by the user, and

  2. Long-term reference wind data made available by DTU Wind and Energy Systems

The Spectral Correction method has been tested and validated by DTU Wind and Energy Systems, and we have found that the method is both accurate and robust. A test and validation report has be published.

The long-term reference wind data has near-global coverage, and this means that the Spectral Correction method for extreme wind calculation can be applied nearly everywhere in the world.

Other improvements in WAsP Engineering 4.0 are:

  • Vastly improved water fetch calculation speed

  • More efficient use of flow model calculation runs, making calculations much faster

  • The turbulent length scale is now limited to the IEC Standard value of 42 m

  • Updated scripts

  • Updated help file

  • Bug fixes
