WAsP Engineering self-study course

The WAsP Engineering self-study course is a learning resource ready whenever you have time for study. The entire course is available in the DTU learning platform and you will have full access to the material for a period of 10 weeks.

The learning objectives of the course are to make you 

  • Proficient in WAsP Engineering and related tools
  • Familiar with the theory behind WAsP Engineering
  • Aware of model limitations in WAsP Engineering

After the course, you will be able to

  • Prepare input for WAsP Engineering
  • Set up a WAsP Engineering project correctly
  • Predict extreme-wind speed, turbulence and flow conditions at individual turbine sites
  • Perform a site assessment according to the IEC 61400-1 standard

The learning method is a mixture video lectures, self-evaluation quizzes and exercises. 

The software is demonstrated by video screencasts and training in the use of the programs is provided by the exercise and their video solutions. Finally, you will practice all skills learned in the course in a case study.

The course is organised as five modules with an expected workload of 7½ hours each. The first module introduces the IEC site assessment and the Windfarm Assessment Tool. The following modules presents the three main models inside WAsP Engineering and the final module is a case study. Each module includes a number of lessons, a discussion forum and a short survey with feedback to the WAsP team.

Module 1 - IEC standards

This module presents the turbine classification and site assessment of the IEC 61400-1 turbine safety standard.

Module 2: Linear flow models

This module discusses linear flow models in general and presents LINCOM, the flow model of WAsP Engineering.

Module 3: Extreme winds

This module discusses extreme winds and how to predict them by WAsP Engineering.

Module 5: Case study

In the final module, you practice everything you learned in a case study. You will submit your project for evaluation and receive a personal feedback report from a member of the WAsP Team.


Practical details

  • The language is English
  • The expected workload is 37½ hours
  • You will receive a free WAsP Suite license, which will be valid for ten weeks. WAsP software export some results in Word and Excel file formats.
  • You will receive a certificate of participation after evaluation of your case study.
  • The price is 800€.
