By the end of this year, we will discontinue support for the WAsP Map Editor. This means that while the WAsP Map Editor will still be included in the WAsP Suite installer, and we will endeavor to keep it functional, it will not receive any further updates or new versions in the future.
The decision to transition away from the WAsP Map Editor was not made lightly, given the value it has had as part of the WAsP workflow. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to all who contributed to its development and maintenance, with special recognition for the primary force behind it; Ole Steen Rathmann, Senior Researcher (Emeritus).
Our new approach to map handling is based on the powerful QGIS software. We have decided to use QGIS because it is a free, open-source, and widely adopted software in today's scientific and engineering communities.
QGIS provides features to support digitizing maps. Additionally, we have created a QGIS plugin, which incorporates Python scripts to aid the importing, editing, and converting elevation and landcover maps from public databases into WAsP maps. Our plugin can be installed via the QGIS software; just search for "WAsP scripting" in the QGIS plugin menu. Special thanks to Rogier Ralph Floors, Senior Researcher at DTU Wind and Energy Systems for developing this tool set.
There are a number of tutorial resources available where you can learn about the QGIS plugin, an introductory presentation including examples, and instructional videos demonstrating installation and application within QGIS here.
You can get in-person instructions on using QGIS for digitizing, importing, editing, and converting WAsP maps by participating in the WAsP Week 2024, which takes place at DTU's Risø campus during 11-15 November 2024. We are also interested in hearing about what tools you use, and what we can do to better support your workflows.
We encourage you to explore the QGIS WAsP map Python scripts. We have included the new methods in all our WAsP training in the last three years and several WAsP users in the industry have already been using them.
You can report bugs in the QGIS plugin. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to reach out to us through the WAsP Forums or our WAsP Contact Form.
