As wind turbines grow, better characterisation of the wind beyond the atmospheric surface layer is needed. A new paper derives an equation for the wind speed profile of the inversion-capped atmospheric boundary layer (the 'conditionally neutral' ABL) by application of the Buckingham Pi theorem and data from 17 highly resolved Large-Eddy Simulations. Compared to classic similarity theory, the new approach includes the temperature inversion that caps ABL and the Coriolis force and arrives at an equation that, compared to LES, exhibits small wind speed errors for most of the ABL.
