Update of Map Editor provides coverage of the entire globe

The new Map Editor version provides import of both elevation maps and roughness maps, covering the entire globe except the Polar Regions.

The new WAsP Map Editor version, 12.1.12.44, released as part of the June-2018 WAsP Suite contains new map-import features.

The earlier version supported import of SRTM-elevation maps from the USGS SRTM internet database. Unfortunately, this database only covered from 56 deg. S (Cape Horn) up to 60 deg. N.

Using essentially the same import portal as for the SRTM-data, the new Map Editor version provides import of both elevation maps and roughness maps, covering the entire globe except the Polar Regions, from the Global Wind Atlas (GWA) warehouse Map Server. Up to 60 deg. N the GWA map server uses the SRTM data set, beyond 60 deg.N, the map server uses the ViewFinder elevation data set, courtesy by the developer of the Viewfinder data set. For the entire globe the Map Editor, via the map server, provides import of roughness maps from the GlobCover database, for the European area the Map Editor additionally provides roughness maps to be imported from Corine database. 

Like the previous Map Editor version, this new version has a fast algorithm to test the consistency of the roughness description, based on roughness areas. This also means that - once the roughness consistency is OK - when editing roughness description, you don’t need to bother about roughness-change lines, but you may treat each single roughness area as an entity.
