Wind Atlas for Egypt

The Wind Atlas for Egypt was finalised and have been available since the beginning of 2006.

The atlas is published by the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) and DTU Wind Energy.

The Wind Atlas for the Gulf of Suez, published in 2003 by NREA and DTU Wind Energy, is also still available.

For more information about wind resource assessments and the status of wind power in Egypt, please contact NREA, the New and Renewable Energy Authority.

For more information on other aspects of Egyptian climatology and weather, please contact EMA, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority.

For more information about numerical and observational wind atlas methodologies, please contact DTU Wind Energy.

The Wind Atlas for Egypt presents the results of a comprehensive wind resource assessment programme covering the entire land area of Egypt. The aim of the programme has been to establish the meteorological basis for the assessment of the wind energy resources all over Egypt, in particular in six designated regions: the Northwest Coast, the Northeast Coast, the Gulf of Aqaba, the Gulf of Suez, the Red Sea and the Western Desert.

The main objective has been to provide reliable and accurate wind atlas data sets for evaluating the potential wind power output from large electricity-producing wind turbine installations. In addition, the Wind Atlas provides an overview of the Egyptian wind resource based on mesoscale modelling – as well as data and some guidelines for the meteorological aspects of the detailed siting of large and small wind farms.

The investigation was conducted from 1998 to 2005 by the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) and Risø DTU under the sponsorship of the Egyptian and Danish governments.
