The WAsP self-study course is implemented in the Itslearning web-based learning platform (LMS).

WAsP self-study course experiences

DTU Wind Energy is offering a flexible and affordable WAsP training course. The course is designed to be cost-effective and to maximise the learning outcome versus resources spent. The first half years experiences have been very positive.

DTU Wind Energy has carried out onsite and online WAsP training courses for 25 years all over the world, and more than 1,800 researchers and engineers have been educated in the WAsP software.

From 2016, we have implemented a self-study WAsP course, where participants sign up individually, whenever they have the time to study. Further, the course is completed at the pace of the individual participant and may last anywhere from one to eight weeks. Included in the course is access to the course material and the WAsP software for eight full weeks, plus supervision and feedback by members of the WAsP team at DTU.

"In particular, the online platform allowed me to study at my pace and to revisit from time to time. It is very helpful as I was juggling with field trips and other project works. The teacher was very responsive and happy to discuss on my questions, so I encourage course-takers to make use of the forum."
Irving Paul Girsang, WAsP self-study course participant

The self-study course has turned out to be cost effective for the participants: it is a complete WAsP course, including feedback from the WAsP team, but at a fraction of the cost – the fee is only one-third of the onsite course and no travelling is required. Also, the learning is potentially deeper because the overall course period is longer and there is time for reflection and feedback. The actual amount of hours spent by the participants is only about 30% more than is used for the onsite course.

The participants have received the course very well; as an example, one student wrote: “From the course, I got the chance to grasp essential insights into wind engineering in a systematic and comprehensive way. In particular, the online platform allowed me to study at my pace and to revisit from time to time. It is very helpful as I was juggling with field trips and other project works. The teacher was very responsive and happy to discuss on my questions, so I encourage course-takers to make use of the forum. Lastly, the case study was good! Working on the project has helped to reflect on my projects and to have fruitful discussions with my boss.”
