Twenty-three years of offshore storms are simulated with a coupled wind-wave system (WRF-SWAN) in a recent paper. The combined system allows for a much more realistic surface-drag modelling at high wind speeds compared to traditional roughness parameterizations (e.g. Charnock). The coupled modelling, therefore, tend to predict extreme winds that are closer to observations.
