WindEnergyHamburg2016

WindEnergy Hamburg 2016

WAsP and DTU Wind Energy will be present at WindEnergy expo 2016.

You can find us at Stand 574, Hall B6.

We have planned several presentations, have a look below and drop by for demonstrations and discussions with the scientists involved in each project:

Tuesday, 27 September 2016, Teaching and Learning:

11:00 - 11:15: "A new flexible and affordable WAsP self-study course"
by Niels G. Mortensen

DTU Wind Energy has carried out on-site WAsP training courses for 25 years all over the world and in recent years, we have also offered on-line courses, in which students can follow a WAsP training course over the Internet anywhere in the world.
The participants sign up individually, whenever they have the time to study. Further, the course is completed at each participants own pace and it may last anywhere from one to eight weeks.
The on-demand, self-study course has turned out to be cost effective, as it is a complete WAsP course, including feedback from the WAsP team, but at a fraction of the cost, as the fee is only one third of the on-site course fee and no travelling is required.
In addition, the learning is potentially deeper because the overall course period is longer and there is time for reflection and feedback.

WindEnergyDay1

14:00 - 14:15: "Wind energy courses at university level"
by Merete Badger

A Massive Open Online Course about Wind Energy was launched on the international learning portal Coursera in early 2016. Participants all over the world are now able to learn the basics of wind energy engineering from experts at DTU Wind Energy. The course has attracted more than 9,000 participants so far and the user satisfaction is high. Based on this positive experience, DTU Wind Energy is developing a full online master programme for continuing education. Thanks to a flexible learning style, the new programme can be followed by employees in the wind energy industry and others who wish to gain more insight in the field of wind energy.

Wednesday, 28 September 2016, Materials Research:

11:00 - 11:15 and 14:00 - 14:15: “Non-destructive materials characterization in 3D”
by Søren Fæster

DTU Wind Energy has recently acquired a state-of-the art laboratory X-ray tomography equipment which allow non-destructive characterization in 3D with a resolution less than a micrometer. The investigated samples are illuminated by X-rays from different angles and the recorded images are in a computer put together to reconstruct the density of the sample in 3D. This technique makes it possible to visualize particles, impurities, porosities, cracks and second phases materials that have a different density than the matrix material without destroying the sample and the technique is therefore ideal for dynamic studies. The tomography equipment at DTU Wind also allow reconstructions based on the diffracted signal, as one of the very first laboratory instruments in the world, and with this technique grain boundary can be visualized. The instrument provides new possibilities for investigating all materials used in wind turbines, right from steel, composites to concrete.

WindEnergyDay2

Thursday, 29 September 2016, Applications:

11:00 - 11:15: "New Extreme wind method in WAsP Engineering 4"
by Xiaoli Larsen

The new method, the spectral correction method, as now implemented in WEng 4.0, combines long term modelled data (e.g. CFDDA, CFSR) with your short wind speed time series. The modelled data provides the climatological variation of extreme wind. The measurements provide with the wind variation in the range from several hours (a resolution the modelled data start to fail to resolve) to a standard resolution of 10 minutes, through the use of power spectrum. Both the calculations of the measured and modelled data are referring to the surface conditions as required for further calculations for particular site (microscale modelling using WEng).
With WEng 4.0, all you need is your short wind time series to obtain the 50-year wind for the site you chose over the globe.

WindEnergyDay3

14:00 - 14:15: "myWindTurbine.com - wind for every rural household on earth"
by Andreas Bechmann

For small, domestic wind turbines, an accurate estimate of the energy yield is fundamental for establishing the feasibility of new wind projects. However, given the relatively modest income of such projects, a professional WAsP analysis is often too costly. Moreover, the proper use of the software requires experience and on-site wind measurements that the small turbine developers rarely have. Therefore, DTU Wind Energy and EMD International A/S have developed a user-friendly yet accurate, web-based tool for planning the development of domestic turbines, at an affordable price.

We look forward to seeing you at stand 574, hall B6!
