Behaviour of nuclear contamination in urban areas
The Chernobyl accident on April 26th 1986 clearly demonstrated that radioactive material released from an accident at a nuclear power plant may deposit over a very large area and affect large populations.

Development of a field-portable luminescence instrument
Development of a field-portable luminescence instrument, with the ultimate aim of providing preliminary luminescence ages in the field. This project will deliver a prototype portable luminescence reader intended to allow the estimation of luminescence ages in the field.

F-18 labelled “Pittsburgh compound B”
F-18 labelled “Pittsburgh compound B” or F18-PIB is a new, promising proprietary PET scanning agent for early imaging / detection of Alzheimers disease. The compound is owned by GE-Health Care, but we have been invited to assist in the early clinical trials as GMP compliant manufacturer of this new experimental drug.

High Power targets for Isotope Production
Development of solid and liquid targets, for improved output in terms of activity, radiochemical speciation and specific activity.

In situ luminescence dating on Mars
Dating of Martian sediments is of importance for very similar reasons to those on Earth – to provide chronological information on climate change.

In vivo trafficking of liposomes labeled by novel [18F]-lipid probes
An industrial PhD project in cooperation with LiPlasome Pharma A/S focusing on radioactive labeling of liposomal drug delivery systems (DDS) in order to elucidate their in vivo behavior. Liposomes for anti-cancer therapy are meant to passively target the tumor site where selective release of the encapsulated chemotherapeutics will take place.

Liposomes for delivery of Radiopharmaceuticals
Liposomes are nanoparticles that can be designed to be stable carriers of potent drugs to diseased tissue upon intravenous administration.

Luminescence materials
Novel materials that can facilitate the use of fiber-coupled organic scintillators within the field of medical physics are developed. The research involves both the synthesis of new scintillators as well as the application of new light guides.

Luminescence physics
Luminescence arises from a complex interaction of radiation with material.

Medical luminescence dosimetry
Risø DTU develops luminescence dosimetry aimed at applications within the field of medical physics. Our main method is based on OSL/RL readout of aluminium oxide crystals attached to optical optical fiber cables, but also organic scintillators are used. These point detectors are well suited for time-resolved in vivo measurements and they are currently used in projects on dose-verification during brachytherapy of cervical cancer patients and breathing-adapted radiotherapy of breast cancer patients.

Medical reference dosimetry
Research and development are carried out within the field of medical reference dosimetry using EPR (electron spin ressonance) of alanine. The current research focusses on applications in external beam radiotherapy (MV photons) using solid phantoms.

Phenomenology and applications of three-dimensional plasma-sheath-lenses
The aim of this project is to further investigate the phenomenology and propose new applications related to the plasma-sheath-lens focusing effects.

Plasma sterilisation
Low temperature atmospheric pressure plasmas have been shown to be suitable for sterilisation and decontamination.

Production of Cu-64
In the last years there has been a growing interest in the use of radiopharmaceuticals labelled with metallic radionuclides.

Radioecology
|
Work is carried out on environmental radioactivity in general, covering both terrestrial and marine systems.
|

Radon
Risø DTU takes part in a new investigation headed by the Danish Cancer Society on the possible association between lung cancer and indoor radon. The study exploit a previously developed statistical prediction model that links information from central data bases on house and geology with indoor radon levels. The model is based on a national survey of indoor radon completed in 2001.

Reactor physics
Reactor physics addresses the nuclear processes in fission and fusion reactors, including neutron and photon transport and neutron activation of structural materials.

Source term estimation
Data from off-site gamma monitoring stations around nuclear installations may be used to estimate the radionuclide source term in case of a nuclear accident with atmospheric releases of activity. A Kalman filter method is developed that provides a real-time estimate of the source term based on measured gamma dose rates

Thermally and optically stimulated luminescence
The Luminescence Research Laboratory investigates the thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated (OSL) properties of a variety of natural and synthetic materials suitable for use in personal and environmental dosimetry. Special emphasis has been laid in the development of OSL techniques using natural materials and ceramics in retrospective accident dosimetry and in archaeological and geological dating.
