DTU inviterer i samarbejde med DI Energibranchen og  Københavns Kommune til konference om ”Energy for smart cities in an urbanised world”.

Konferencen afholdes på Københavns Rådhus tirsdag den 29. november 2011, kl. 10 – 17:30

Konferencen tager udgangspunkt i den hastige urbanisering, som fører til et voksende antal meget store byer. FNs befolkningsprognoser viser, at verdens befolkning forventes at overstige 9 milliarder i 2050, og næsten 6,3 milliarder mennesker vil bo i byerne. Denne voksende bybefolkning vil blive spredt over et stort antal små og mellemstore byer, men fremskrivningerne viser også, at antallet af megabyer og andre meget store byområder vil stige betydeligt. Disse store byer bidrager til klimaændringer, og bliver selv påvirket af konsekvenserne. Derfor er der brug for en ny tilgang til, hvad byerne kan gøre for at blive gode levesteder, økonomisk velfungerende og miljømæssigt ansvarlige. Løsningen er Smarte Byer, det vil sige energieffektive, forbruger-fokuserede og teknologi-drevne byer.

På konferencen offentliggøres Risø Energy Report 10: ”Energy for smart cities in an urbanised world”. Rapporten præsenterer den nyeste forskning om at skabe en bæredygtig energiforsyning til fremtidens storbyer, og den giver en række eksempler på de ”Smart Cities” initiativer der allerede er taget i Danmark, Europa og andre dele af verden.

PhD student Xiaoru Hou will defend her thesis “Development of Industrial Yeast for Second Generation Bioethanol Production” October 31 at 14:00. The defence will take place at Risø DTU in the H.H. Koch Auditorium. Afterwards a reception will be held.

A one-day conference to be held in Copenhagen at the Tivoli Hotel and Congress Centre on Thursday October 27th will address the topic of nanocomposite materials based on bio-derived polymers for use in packaging applications.

The conference will be chaired by David Plackett from Risø DTU Biosystems Division and, as well as several presentations about the recently completed NanoPack project which David coordinated, the meeting will feature invited talks by Roland Scharathow from European Bioplastics, Suprakas Sinha Ray from CSIR in South Africa and Nanja Hedal Kløverpris from Force Technology.

The conference is supported by the Danish Polymer Society (Polymer Teknisk Selskab) and by the NanoConnect Scandinavia network.

The Conference on Global Organic Photo Voltaic (GOPV)  will be held October 10-12, 2011 at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

Composite materials for structural performance: towards higher limits

Composite materials based on long aligned fibres are increasingly used in large structures such as wind turbine blades, aeroplanes and ships. The structural performance is limited by (a) the properties of the materials and (b) by the design methods and criteria used in the structural design process.

The limits of materials properties can be increased by material development, by understanding how the composite material works at various length scales, for instance, understanding the interplay between properties of fibres, matrix and the fibre/matrix interface through micromechanical modelling and microscale experiments. Material behaviours can be changed, e.g. the fracture properties from brittle to damage tolerant behaviour.

Design limits, e.g. criteria for material failure and lifetime predictions, can be expanded by developing and validation improved models for the critical limit states, e.g. the onset of fatigue failure under multiaxial stress state, the use of damage tolerant design approach and the use of more advanced modelling tools such as cohesive zone modelling.

This Risø course gives background for understanding the requirements of EN ISO 11137.

The emphasis of this course is on high energy (10 MeV) electron beam sterilization, but aspects of low energy (100 keV) electron beam and of gamma sterilization will also be discussed.

The focus of the course is on two aspects:

        1. Dosimetry as required in

            - IQ/OQ, Installation / Operational Qualification 
            - PQ, Performance Qualification 
            - Routine monitoring and Process Control

        2. Establishing the sterilization dose

M.Sc. Anders Beierholm will present his PhD thesis “Pulse-resolved radiotherapy dosimetry using fiber-coupled organic scintillators”.

The lecture will take place at the H.H. Koch Auditorium at Risø DTU 16th of August 2011 from 2 pm to 4.45 pm (including Q and A from the opponents and advisors).

The Risø DTU course "Medical Radiation Dosimetry" provides the theoretical and metrological background for measurement of radiation doses in radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine. Mads Døssing forsvarer sin Ph.D. afhandling med titlen: ”Optimization of wind turbine rotors – using advanced aerodynamic and aeroelastic models and numerical optimization”

The world faces a major challenge as global CO2 emissions must be reduced dramatically, in the long term even beyond zero, in order to limit climate change. At the same time however, it is necessary to provide energy services to accommodate economic growth and, in particular, to meet the growing needs of the developing countries and to ensure secure energy supplies. Furthermore, the energy sector has to cope with the financial crisis which is aving a significant impact on almost all countries.

This workshop and research school will address the feasibility of using renewable or nuclear energy to recycle CO₂ into sustainable hydrocarbon fuels which can be used in existing infrastructure.
