Applications

Superconductors can conduct electronpairs without any electrical resistance and coil made of superconductors can thefore generate large magnetic fields without getting hot. Similarly superconducting cables can transport large currents without heating up.

However the superconducting state is limited by 

  • The critical temperature TC under which the electron pair formation can take place
  • The critical applied field HC2 where vorticies in the superconducting condensate overlap and suppress the superconducting state. 
  • The critical current density JC where vorticies start to move and thereby dissipate energy.

Thus all superconducting applications must provide a solution for cooling the superconductor well below Tc and to unsure that the superconductor is operated suficcienly below the critical surface. 

The group has focussed on the following large scale application, which can have a big impact on the energy sector in the future:

  • Superconducting power cables
  • Superconducting wind turbine generators 
  • Superconducting confinement of plasma in future fussion reactors
