Composites and Materials Mechanics

Characterisation

The non-destructive characterisation techniques cover X-ray, acoustic emission ultrasonic and thermography techniques. The X-ray equipment includes real time detector and film-based techniques.

Acoustic Emission is used in structural health monitoring of glass-fibre composites mainly for wind blades.

Ultrasound is used both for traditional defect detection and for determination of material properties. Scan systems for both immersion and air-coupled technique are available.

Thermography and acoustic emission is used for damage detection both in active and passive mode.
