SRTM import may fail

Update: Map Editor SRTM download problem solved

Some users have had problems with SRTM-import via the Map Editor. This problem is now solved.

Map Editor users should simply specify the following secure SRTM internet address using the “Locations |  SRTM-site-URL” menu option of the Map Editor:
https://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/

The SRTM-import facility in the Map Editor does not work - apparently the download process from the SRTM version 2 Internet data base fails.

We are in the process of finishing a new Map Editor version - and hopefully we can fix the problem there.

Meanwhile, if you are among the affected WAsP users, here is what you can do.

The basic idea is that you manually download the necessary map-tiles (files) from the SRTM-database into the WAsP\SRTMLibrary on your harddisk under you personal profile - if you are in doubt about the full pathname please consult the Map Editor menu option "Locations |  SRTM Local library". Afterwards the Map Editor will then use the tiles in the SRTMLibrary for the SRTM import.

First, if you are in the middle of a failing SRTM download process, just cancel it, and close down the Map Editor.

Now, it is most practical that you prepare a list of which 1x1 degree map tiles you will need for your task. Then use the general STRM-version 2 web page (http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/), select SRTM3 and then the relevant "continent". Next, find and download the needed.hgt.zip file(s) to the SRTMLibrary. The files are named according to the Lat-Lon coordinate of the lower left corner: NyyExxx.hgt.zip, e.g. N55E012.hgt.zip.

Afterwards you must download the water-boundary map tiles. You step back (twice) to the STRM-version 2 general web-page and select SWBD, and after that select SWBDEast or SWBDWest (to select eastern or western hemisphere) to get into the library of coast- and lake-shore-lines etc. Finally, find and download the needed water boundary zip file(s) to the same SRTMLibrary folder, using in principle the same naming convention, but with latitude and longitude swapped: exxxnyy.zip, e.g. e012n55.zip.

Once you have completed the downloading, you may start the Map Editor again and re-do the SRTM import; the Map Editor will now import the necessary SRTM-files from your local SRTMLibrary - and do the job properly.
