New geostrophic wind shear model in WAsP 12.1

In WAsP 12.1 we introduce a new geostrophic wind shear model to provide more accurate AEP predictions

In WAsP 12.1, the vertical extrapolation (stability) model and horizontal extrapolation (EWA) model are modified to take into account large-scale horizontal temperature gradients (‘baroclinic’ effects), which induce geostrophic wind shear. The method is implemented by extracting geostrophic-scale wind shear from global CFSR reanalysis data, with values from the nearest grid points automatically used (and shown in the WAsP 12.1 user interface) to provide more accurate AEP predictions.

The geostrophic wind shear model has been tested and validated by DTU Wind Energy, and our results show that it provides a consistent improvement.

More information about the theory behind the new geostrophic wind shear model, our test and validation of it, and our implementation in WAsP 12.1, can be found in the paper “Implementation of geostrophic wind shear model in WAsP 12.1”, by Rogier Floors and Mark Kelly (DTU Wind Energy report).
