WAsP – the Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program |
Version 2 (the 'finished' data set) of the SRTM 3 arc-second elevation data set
is now available for land areas between 57°S and 60°N.
These grid data can be used to make height contour maps for the WAsP flow model, though some editing close to the sites may still be required. In addition, the data set now contains a detailed land-sea mask: the SRTM Water Body Data set.
You can read more about the SRTM mission and data on the NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission home page.
How to make a WAsP orography map from the data is described in this page. The instructions may seem somewhat elaborate, but the entire procedure can be done in less than half an hour. New and updated procedures and software are being developed; some third party software is listed here.
The different Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data sets can be downloaded from the SRTM site. The site contains the following documentation and data sets:
| Folder name | Contents of folder |
| Documentation | Documentation in mainly pdf format |
| SRTM1 | SRTM 1 arc-second elevation data set, ~31 m resolution or better, US only |
| SRTM3 | SRTM 3 arc-second elevation data set, ~93 m resolution or better, 57°S to 60°N |
| SRTM30 | SRTM 30 arc-second elevation data set, ~926 m resolution or better, near-global |
| SWBD | SRTM Water Body Data set |
