WAsP – the Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program

WAsP 8 installation guide

This brief guide describes the general release of the installation program for WAsP 8. Great care has been taken to ensure that this installation will run successfully, but as with all Windows software installations, there is a risk that running it could upset the normal functioning of your system. It is recommended that you exercise some caution in choosing when to run this installation program. Please contact the Risø DTU WAsP team before installing if you need any specific advice.

The WAsP 8 installation disk

The WAsP 8 installation files are shipped on a CD-ROM, which contains the following software packages:

Installation from the Web

Installing directly from www.wasp.dk is a 3-step process. The WAsP installation software is contained in archives (*.zip files) which must be downloaded to the hard drive of your computer (step 1). Step 2 is unzipping the downloaded archive file(s) to unpack the installation files. You may have to change the suggested folder for the unpacked files, “C:\Program files\Wasp\Install”, to make it fit to your operating system. Step 3 is the actual installation as described below in Installing WAsP 8.

Hardware requirements

WAsP 8.3 will run on a modern PC with minimum 133 MHz processor, 32 MB RAM and 80 MB free hard disk space. However, at least 800 MHz processor and 128 MB RAM are recommended, especially for large projects.

System requirements

WAsP 8.3 will work with 2000 and XP (home and professional). Windows 95, 98, ME, NT are no longer supported.

Installing WAsP 8

First, close all active programs running on the PC. If the installation files which you are using are located on a network drive, we recommend that you make a copy on your local hard drive and then install using the local copies. If originating from the web, the installation files should be located in the folder “C:\Program files\WAsP\Install” or the like.

We are distributing the release as Windows Installer packages called Wasp8Setup.msi and MapEditorInstall.msi. If your computer recognizes this type of file, then just double-click on it to begin installing the software – if installing from scratch, first the WAsP8SetUp and then the MapEditorInstall.

If your computer doesn't recognize the *.msi-file, then you can run the alternative installation Wasp8Setup.exe file instead. This will first set up the Windows Installer and then launch the actual installation. You may need to reboot before the installation can continue. Running this file instead of the MSI file will not cause any problems, even if you already have the Windows Installer on your computer. If the problem occurs in connection with the Map EditorInstall.msi, please execute instmsiw.exe (Windows 2000 or XP), then the *.msi files should be recognized.

As with any other power tool you should 'read, understand and follow the instructions'; in this case those given by the installation wizard. Agree to the default values and folders suggested by the installation program unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing. WAsP 8, some utility programs and sample data files will then be installed in the folder C:\Program Files\Wasp and several sub-folders. It will also appear in the Start menu, as a 'WAsP' folder under the Programs menu item. In case you have already installed a WAsP product (like WAsP Engineering) on you computer, make sure you install to the same drive and folder as this other product.

Upgrading from WAsP version 7

If you are already running WAsP 7.3, then it is perfectly safe to install WAsP 8.3 as well. Both programs will work without problems, and you can even run them simultaneously. It might be helpful to have an overlap period when both programs are installed, so that you can compare their behavior. However, we cannot guarantee that WAsP 8 will run along with earlier versions of WAsP 7 (7.0 .. 7.2); these, should be updated to WAsP 7.3 before installing WAsP 8.

If you decide to install WAsP 8.3 alongside WAsP 7, then please install them to the same folder. This will ensure that if and when you subsequently remove WAsP 7, WAsP 8.3 will still work correctly. When you want to remove WAsP 7, use the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet. When WAsP 7 is removed, and you next try to start WAsP 8.3, Windows will do a quick re-configuration job to make sure that version 8.3 will run again. At this point, you may need to have access to the original WAsP 8.3 installation file.

Installing as Power User or Administrator

You must be logged on as least as Power User to perform the installation. As a power user you can only install the software for yourself. If you logged in as an administrator, you can opt to install the software for all users of the computer, not just yourself. If you choose to do that, then the software will be configured separately for additional users when they first run it. On Windows 2000 this is usually the next time that they log in, and on Windows XP it's when they first try to launch the software from the Start menu. The per-user configuration will usually require access to the original installation files, so this will not work if you performed the administrator install from a CD which was subsequently removed, or from a network share to which the user does not have access. It's best to make a local copy of the installation file and use that for the original installation. Also, the per-user user configuration involves repeating the installation of the licence data (see below) for each of the additional users.

Licence installation

Unless meant to run in demo-mode WAsP 8 requires the installation of a valid licence prior to use. The “WAsP 8 licencing guide” document tells you how to do this. WAsP 8 licences are different from those of WAsP 7, so a new licence is needed even if a WAsP 7 licence is installed. How-ever, both licences may be installed on the same computer and both WAsP 7 and WAsP 8 will work.

A note for WAsP Engineering users

If you have WAsP Engineering installed, please check that you have upgraded to version 1.2 or 2.0 before installing WAsP 8.3, because there is a risk of some incompatibility between WAsP Engineering 1.0 and WAsP 8.3. If you have not yet received your WAsP Engineering upgrade, then please contact the support staff at wengsupport@risoe.dk. Note also, that WAsP and WAsP Engineering must be installed in the same folder, e.g. ..\Wasp\Bin, since they share certain components.

Getting started

We suggest you start by reading through the ‘Introduction’ section of the WAsP help facility. If you are already using the existing versions of WAsP, you might read on in the ‘Notes for users of previous versions’ section. Next, we recommend that you work through the Quick Start Tutorial to see for yourself what WAsP 8 is all about.

Carrying on…

The documentation and User’s Guide to the WAsP 8 program are contained in the WAsP help facility. The European Wind Atlas (Troen and Petersen, 1989) contains background information that may not be included in the help file with this release.

If you have problems using the WAsP software please send e-mail to waspsupport@risoe.dk. If you do not have e-mail, you may send a fax to the number given on the reverse side. You should also check the list of known issues at www.wasp.dk or the list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Keeping your installation up to date

The latest version of the WAsP 8 program can be downloaded from www.wasp.dk in the form of an update file to the main installation on the CD-ROM. Note, that it will only run on the PC computer where the original WAsP installation was made. Updates of other WAsP 8 files and programs may be available as well (WAsP help facility, Turbine Editor etc.)
